“A career path is rarely a path at all. A more interesting life is usually a more crooked, winding path of missteps, luck and vigorous work. It is almost always a clumsy balance between the things you try to make happen and the things that happen to you."
— Tom Freston, American Investor

Greetings Fit Rich Fam!

Spring is officially here.

If you're looking for a workout program to get in shape I got you covered.

Here is a free 4-day workout program to get you in shape in time for Spring/Summer.

Without further ado, let's proactively build your Fit Rich Life.

This is your weekly dose of actionable tips, tools & strategies to take your Fitness, Money, and Life to the Next Level.

FITNESS: Use the power of magic counting to get more out of your exercise.

Your body is stronger than your mind thinks.

A powerful way to tap into this is to use what I call "magic counting" when you're putting in your reps for a set of an exercise.

Let's say you have a set of 15 reps to do for an exercise. Instead of counting one through fifteen break your counting up into three sets of five.

Meaning, count to five three times instead of counting one through fifteen.

This tricks your brain into thinking your body has less to do because reaching five reps seems easier (mentally) than reaching fifteen reps.

Even if I am doing lower rep ranges with heavier weights with a rep range of 5-8 reps I will still break it down into smaller chunks.

I know this seems so simple that it cannot possibly work, but give it a try and you'll be amazed how much easier it is to reach your total targeted reps and hit new personal records.

MONEY: Think of investing as spending your money on freedom.

In the pursuit of Financial Independence, many go through the process of radically reducing their expenses to free up money to invest, and for some, it can feel restrictive.

Spending money feels good.

Buying stuff releases dopamine in the brain.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter associated with reward and pleasure.

It plays a major role in our brain's reward system.

When we reduce our spending on things it can reduce the feelings of pleasure and reward we once got from purchasing stuff.

This can make life feel less enjoyable.

Yet, if we can reframe our thinking and mentally tie our purchasing of investments to the idea that we are spending our money on shares of freedom this can lead to even greater levels of dopamine release and increased levels of lasting happiness.

Money's greatest intrinsic value is its ability to give us control over our time.

Being able to do what we want, when we want, with who we want is the greatest contributor to one's happiness in life.

By investing our money into income-generating assets like well-diversified low-fee index funds we are increasing our ability to have more control over all aspects of our life.

Each time you invest your money you are purchasing more freedom.

LIFE: Reflect on how far you've come.

Everyone goes through setbacks.

Maybe you recently lost a job or a reliable income source.

Or maybe, you had an unexpected financial expense related to your car or home.

Maybe you've fallen off track with your fitness.

After setbacks, it's easy to get discouraged, but the truth is you have come so far.

No matter where you are in life, you have surely made significant progress in at least a few areas of life.

When I feel discouraged after a setback or get frustrated with the pace of my progress I like to think back on just how far I've come in the last several years.

I find that the more I zoom out the more I can consciously recognize just how far I've come. Here’s what I think back on:

  • 9.5 years ago I was addicted to drugs and alcohol and working in an environment that was killing me. I was using substances to mask deep depression.

  • Up until 31 I was carrying 30lbs more body fat than I wanted.

  • 7 years ago I was $80,000 in debt, 6 years behind on my taxes, and felt like I would never make it financially.

Contrast this with where I am at now:

  • Celebrating 10-years of Sobriety from Alcohol, Adderall & Marijuana in September.

  • Doing work that I'm deeply passionate about (work that is having a positive impact on the lives of so many others).

  • Been in incredible shape year-round for nearly 10 years.

  • Dug myself out of debt and became a multimillionaire.

  • Happily married, living in a beautiful home by the beach.

Reflecting on this helps me recognize not only how far I've come, but gives me faith that if I keep putting in the reps in all the important areas of life I will continue to make massive progress.

We often overestimate how much we can accomplish in a month or year, but radically underestimate how far we will go in 5-10 years if we keep showing up.

We can't lose if we don't quit.

Closing Thoughts:

Growth and positive transformation is not perfectly linear.

Some weeks we make great progress.

Other weeks we feel like we're taking a few steps backwards away from our aspirations and goals.

Yet if we keep showing up and putting in the work over time we start to see how the growth is compounding in positive ways, but sometimes we need to zoom out to recognize this.
