Greetings Fit Rich Fam!
We're officially in the last month of the year. Pretty wild that it's about to be 2024!
Without further ado, let's proactively build your Fit Rich Life.
This is your weekly dose of actionable tips, tools & strategies to take your Fitness, Money, and Life to the Next Level.
FITNESS: Step your way into greater fitness than the average person.
As of 1997, the World Health Organization declared that we are having a Global Epidemic of Obesity.
It’s really no wonder why.
Many people now spend the majority of their day sedentary.
The average American only takes 3,000-4,000 steps a day.
I encourage all of my coaching clients to get at least 10,000 steps a day (on average) and for those who want to be Super Fit, I recommend 15,000 - 20,000+ (what I do).
Getting 10,000-20,000+ steps a day may seem like a lot but the key is to build habits, work environment, and an optimal lifestyle that naturally supports you in achieving this even if you're a sedentary knowledge worker like me.
Here is how I easily get 15,000-20,000+ steps a day:
(1) I have both a walking pad and a bike chair that I pair with my adjustable desk (see this Instagram Reel for a visual representation).
(2) I move and work whenever I can. I'll walk or use a stationary cardio machine (treadmill, bike, stairclimber, elliptical machine, etc) while working off of my phone to take phone calls, respond to work email/chat, and I even create & consume social media while moving. I write a good portion of my weekly Newsletter (the one you're reading now) while walking or using my home bike chair or walking pad or while on a cardio machine at the gym.
(3) I go on walking or hiking dates with my wife, family and friends. Walking and talking is truly one of my most favorite ways to engage with others.
(4) I go on self-education walks with myself where I will listen to an audiobook or podcast.
One of the biggest reasons I stay sub 10% Body Fat year round is because my Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) is very high. The number of steps you get per day plays a massive role in your overall NEAT.
If you want to be fitter then most then up your steps to well above the average.
MONEY: Beware of Scams.
In the digital age scams are going on year round, but it seems like there are even more around the holidays.
At least a few times a week I get notices of:
(1) Text messages that a UPS package wasn't delivered even though I’m not expecting a package.
(2) Calls from someone claiming to be from one of my financial institutions.
(3) Facebook direct messages telling me that I need to update my password or personal information.
(4) People randomly messaging me about Crypto or Forex on WhatsApp or Telegram.
(5) Phishing emails.
(6) Imposter Instagram accounts of people I know sending me messages with hyperlinks to click on.
And the list goes on.
Professional scammers are very good at quickly building trust & rapport so be extra wary.
Here are some tips to avoid getting scammed:
(1) Never open up hyperlinks that have been texted, emailed, or directly messaged to you on a social media platform from people you do not know. If it is from someone you know double-check that it's not a fake imposter account.
(2) If it's a financial institution you have an account with that has called you, hang up and look up their official phone number online and give them a direct call to find out if it's truly legit. I never answer phone numbers I don't have stored in my phone.
(3) Never give someone you don't know and trust remote access to your computer or log into a sensitive online account (like your bank) while on the phone or on a virtual meeting with someone you don't personally know & trust.
(4) Consider freezing your credit so that no one can open up a new credit card in your name. You can unfreeze it any time you want to apply for credit of any type.
(5) Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) on all of your online accounts.
(6) Make it a habit to update your passwords quarterly.
(7) Use a password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden.
(8) If it feels fishy or if it feels at all weird, talk to someone you trust (partner, friend, family member, etc). Tell them what's going on.
This is just a friendly reminder to protect yourself from getting scammed.
LIFE: Work on your Goals and Dreams (consciously and proactively).
If you don't consciously choose your Goals you will be assigned goals by society.
If you're not proactively working on your Dream, by default you will be working on someone else's dream.
Now, it's not necessarily bad to work on some of the goals assigned to you by societal programming, but it is imperative that you are consciously aware of them and ensure that they are aligned with your values, who you want to be, and the life progression you want to undergo.
For example, a lot of people are programmed by society to purchase and own a home.
Especially, when they see all their friends buying homes.
Many people unknowingly get financially enslaved when the loan provider approves them for a loan that is actually much more than they can comfortably afford.
This is exacerbated by a Real Estate agent who is motivated to sell the most expensive house they can sell to their client to increase the commission they get off the sale of the house.
I know a lot of people who are shackled to jobs they don't like because they have to service their mortgage and things are so tight financially that they can't get ahead.
The same goes for working on someone else's dream.
It isn't necessarily bad to work on someone else's dream, but make sure that whatever dream you are working on is at least aligned with your values and ideally something that will empower you to make progress on your own dream.
Food for thought as you reflect upon 2023 and start planning for 2024.
