FITNESS: Get active outdoors.
Getting active outdoors is a recipe for joy & fulfillment. Go for a walk, hike, bike, rollerblade, run, or play an outdoor game like Spikeball, pickleball, frisbee, catch, or whatever floats your boat. Your mind, body & spirit will thank you with loads of feel-good positive emotions & energy. This will pay you in the form of happiness dividends for days. Now that summer is here there are no excuses. Let this be your friendly reminder to get active outdoors this week!
MONEY: The number one predictor of job satisfaction.
The number one predictor of job satisfaction is your opinion of your direct manager or boss. If you think well of them & like the way they manage/lead then the chances of you being happy in your current job are very high. On the other hand, if you do not think well of your manager or do not like how they manage/lead you will be consistently unhappy with your work life. Most people spend a third of their entire life working on any given week so it is critical to get this right. If you don't have a high opinion of your boss you have three options: (1) have a conversation with your boss about how they manage/lead you & try to improve the situation, (2) seek employment within a different department with a different manager within your current company, or (3) get a job at another company. You can vet options 1 & 2 before pursuing option 3 if you are generally happy with your overall company culture & industry segment. If you attempt option 1 & have a conversation with your boss & things don't improve within 1-3 months it is time to pursue option 2 or 3. Lastly, if you manage other people ask yourself how you would like to work for yourself. Bonus points if you talk with your direct reports on how you can better support & lead them.
LIFE: Suffering is an identity, pain is temporary.
You already know what I am talking about here. We all know someone who is constantly suffering. Complaining, complacency, making excuses & "woe is me" with their current life/work/relationship situation are their baseline state. Maybe this person is you. If it is, realize that suffering is an identity that you can choose to no longer identify with. Instead, you can choose to see that the pain is temporary and it is just a signal that something needs to change. Whether it be your overall life satisfaction, work, relationships, or health/fitness the key is to take 100% responsibility to make changes until the pain is relieved & you are no longer in a state of suffering. You can play the victim, or you can be the author of your life. Which will you choose? If this isn't you, but it is someone important to you in your life (like a partner, family member, friend, or colleague) forward them this newsletter & maybe they will get the hint that it's time to make a change.
